                           ROY

Third base coach Blue is yelling words of encouragement after I got two strikes on me.

Full shot of player being hosted on team mates shoulders

I can see that fast ball coming at me down the middle of the plate. I swung my bat.  I felt that good flush sound when the ball kisses the bat.  I knew it was a hit.

The line drive sailed over the leaping shortstop’s glove still rising and sailing over the center fielder's out reached glove.

Racing to 1st base I saw coach Thomas’s arms circling like a windmill instructing me to keep going to second.

Speeding into 2nd I checked to see where the ball was. The outfielder  had fell down chasing ball as it landed and rolled to the fence and stopped.   Otherwise it would have kept on rolling to Linwood St.

My heart raced as the crowd noise got even wilder.  I saw Bussy, and Wiggie scoring headed home.

I rounded second headed for third behind Richard rounding third.  I saw third base coach BLUE arms way waving me not to stop, head home.  I heard his voice over the cheering fans screaming, take it home ROY babe, take it home.

I rounded third and sped home
.
Motoring home I saw the catcher stooping down with the ball snug in his catcher’s mitt straddling the plate protecting it waiting for me.  My heart was pounding like a thousand drums.

I threw my head back and and started to execute my fade away  slide.  Me and ball arrived at the same time.

Sure enough he followed my spikes, to tag
my evading feet and left home plate unprotected. I leaned back and touched the edge of the plate with my fingertips about a micro second before his glove thouched my spikes.  The crowd and team mates went hush. It was dead silence waiting for the umps call.  Everything seemed like it was moving in slow motion.

Then I heard the Ump yell SAFE!!

The crowd went crazy  with joy.

My teammates, who had scored in front of me, had  formed a welcoming committee for me at home plate, while the rest poured from the dugout.

They all  lifted me on their shoulders, and paraded me around the field.
The load of parents and supporters were jumping up and down, cheering and yelling.
THOMAS and BLUE ran over to us and we all celebrated like it was New Year’s.  Some of the moms and teen age girls were even crying.
